New EC2 and RDS Rightsizing Engine – General Availability

We are excited to announce the general availability of our new EC2 and RDS rightsizing feature. Built on a more robust engine, the new feature generates recommendations in seconds, and offers up to 3 recommendations for each instance. Complete with a new user interface, our new rightsizing feature delivers cost and savings summaries, customizable efficiency targets for resource utilization, upsizing recommendations, and the ability to drill down into each instance to view usage. Data from our new rightsizing engine is available via a GraphQL API that enables you to programmatically set efficiency targets and consume recommendations.

New features since the public beta launch include:

  • Ability to export data to a CSV file

  • Ability to group recommendations by Account or Perspective group

  • Considering actual usage hours of instances to calculate cost and savings (instead of assuming that the instance is running constantly)

Many additional enhancements are still to come, including the ability to suppress certain instance types from recommendations, edit the columns in the table, and view costs after commitment-based discounts (e.g., RIs and Savings Plans) have been applied. Classic rightsizing tools will eventually be deprecated after all existing functionality is available in the new engine.

To access our new EC2 and RDS Rightsizing feature, go to Recommendations > Rightsizing > Rightsizing (New). Learn more about our new rightsizing engine in this Help Center article.

Azure Commitment Discount Recommendations – Public Beta

We are pleased to announce the public beta of Azure Commitment Discount Recommendations, which provides recommendations for all reservable Azure services. This new feature provides insight into costs and reveals potential savings for reservable services, as well as sortable columns and the ability to view usage metrics for each recommendation. Recommendations are pulled into the platform through Microsoft’s Usage Details API, and data from the commitment-based discounts are available via a GraphQL API.

In addition to reservation recommendations for all Azure services, this feature supports additional capabilities, including:

  • Exporting data to a CSV file

  • Choosing multiple subscriptions and services for which to review recommendations

  • Viewing On-Demand usage details per recommendation

To access this feature in the platform, select Azure in the top banner and navigate to Recommendations > Commitment Discounts. For more information, please refer to this Help Center article.

Updates to Perspectives – Increased Group Limits & Auto-Delete Empty Dynamic Groups

We are announcing two updates to Perspectives aimed at enhancing usability and management. First, the default Perspective Group limits for new Perspectives has increased, doubling from 200 to 400 Perspective Groups per Perspective. This update is currently available for all customers. For existing Perspectives, please submit a support ticket to request a Perspective Group limit increase.

Second, you can now automatically delete empty Perspectives Groups. This new capability addresses a common occurrence arising from Perspective Groups that result from dynamic rules for asset types based on tag keys. As tag values are renamed or removed in the native cloud over time, the asset counts for these dynamic groups can drop to zero. These empty Perspective Groups do not have any historical costs associated with them, but also count against the group limit and can clutter the dropdown menus where Perspective Groups are displayed. These empty Perspective Groups are periodically deleted as a best-practice, and you can now enable this action to happen automatically on your behalf.

To enable this capability, from the Perspectives page, simply slide the “Auto-delete Empty Dynamic Groups” toggle to On, as shown below. This setting is specific to the current Perspective and is not enabled by default. Once enabled, during each periodic Perspective refresh, if a Perspective Group defined by a dynamic rule no longer has any associated assets, it will be removed from the Perspective. At this time, this does not apply to groups defined by static rules or Container Assets.
